Eco Council Energy Brings Bronze!

11th February 2020

Hanbury First School’s Eco-Council held a cake sale this afternoon, to celebrate gaining the Eco Bronze award and to help them with their quest for Silver!

Each class is represented on the Eco-Council, with meetings held regularly each fortnight.  They have fulfilled a series of requirements to gain the Internationally-recognised award.

A review of the school’s environment was completed and a 3-point action plan has been developed by the group.  Targets already met include to increase composting and recycling as much as possible and to reduce the dependency on single use plastic.

A wide variety of items can be recycled at Hanbury, including pens, batteries and school uniform!  Children now drink milk poured from glass bottles in reusable cups instead of cartons with plastic straws.

Now the children have presented their findings in a special assembly, the final point of action is to convert food waste into energy.

“Our cake sale today was to celebrate our achievement but also to raise money to help us pay for food to be collected and turned into energy,” said Teaching Assistant, Liz Larner who co-ordinates the School’s Eco-Council.

The sale raised £54.46, which when combined with money from other fundraising events, means that the overall total is £140.

"This will pay for our food waste to be turned into energy until the end of the school year.  We would love to make the project sustainable though, so we will be looking into long-term funding too.

“We are so close to Silver now and are hoping to reach the highest, Green Flag award soon,” she added.  “This couldn’t have happened without the children’s hard work and enthusiasm.  They have some exciting plans to develop the positive impact they are already having on our environment.

“We are very lucky to come to school in the heart of the Worcestershire Countryside,” said Hanbury Headteacher, Andrew Payne.

“The children and staff who give their time to run Eco Council should be very proud.  With this level of commitment to the environment, I am reassured our surroundings - and the planet - is in safe hands!”
