Botanical Gardens Trip

Year 2 had a great day in the sunshine on Tuesday while exploring the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

We arrived and met Ruth who took us on a short walk to our learning marquee, showing us some beautiful plants and trees along the way. Ruth showed us some Birch Trees which had bark like paper before showing us some other varieties of tree which aren't native to the United Kingdom.

We then set off into the grounds and saw a tree which was over 200 years old- it is now protected and there is a cordon around the tree to protect is roots and allow the tree to live healthily for as long as possible.

Part of our workshop involved working in partners-one blindfolded and the other guiding them to a tree where they had to feel the patterns and dimensions of the trunk and branches. We then took off the blindfolds and the children had to guess which tree they had just touched.

Up next was bark rubbing, using wax crayons, which really showed us the intricate patterns each tree trunk has. We finished our workshop by hunting for leaves and petals which had fallen off the trees and plants to make a beautiful crown, which we proudly wore!

Other highlights of the day included spotting a Redwoods Tree, which was so tall we couldn't see the top, as well as a Banana Tree in the Tropical House and a variety of cacti in the Arid House. Somehow, we managed to squeeze in lunch and a play on the park too, before heading back to school in time for home time. A huge well done to the whole class, we were incredibly impressed with their listening and behaviour, and they did our school proud when walking around the gardens!
