We were thrilled to welcome local author, Sharon Hopwood and Little Mouse to school today.

Sharon recently published her first children’s book which aims to help children become body language detectives!

“Little Mouse is Absolutely, Completely, Totally FINE!” supports personal, social, emotional development by exploring emotions… and helps spot them in others.

Sharon is an expert in personal safety and anti-bullying.  Her book combines her love for coaching, writing and empowering children. Today’s visit coincided perfectly with Anti-Bullying Week.

After being introduced to a whole host of feelings - big and small - through the eyes of Little Mouse, the school were read the story by its author.  The children then took part in fun games, guessing how their friends were feeling, just by looking at their expression or how they behaved.

The fun continued for the children in Reception class; making bookmarks, colouring Little Mouse masks and acting out the story.

“Hearing how a book is brought to life from the author themselves is really inspiring for the children - and adults!” commented Hanbury School’s Reading Lead, Verity Mills.  “We’re constantly looking to provide opportunities to develop a love of reading and writing for all of the children at our school.

“Everyone enjoyed finding out about Little Mouse too,” she added.  “One of the many important lessons we try to teach is the knowledge that mental health really matters.

“Through lessons within the curriculum, via initiatives like Anti-Bullying week and as a result of Sharon’s visit today, we know children at Hanbury are aware that it’s OK to feel a range of emotions,” added Mrs Mills.

“We also make sure that pupils are given strategies to help themselves, or to feel comfortable asking for support as soon as it’s needed.”
“Little Mouse is Absolutely, Completely, Totally FINE!”, written by Sharon Hopwood, illustrated by Marisa Morea and published by Farshore/HarperCollins is available online and in bookshops.
