We were very proud to spend the morning with John Garfield; an ex-Hanbury pupil and member of the Royal British Legion on Thursday.
John served in the Territorial Army and several members of his family served in the armed forces, so has first hand experience of how important it is to wear our poppies and remember all those who have sacrificed so much for us to be safe.
He spent time with Year 4, explaining the significance of Remembrance Day and then spoke in Worship about how almost every village in the country lost someone during the 2 World Wars.
However, John asked us to not only remember the sacrifices in those conflicts. He told us how that in all 80 of the years since VE and VJ Day, our armed forces have been asked to go and serve overseas, leaving families and friends behind.
To thank him for his visit, we all sang 2 songs about poppies and their connection to remembrance.
“The children were totally engaged with John’s message,” said Year 4 Teacher, Jamie Mills. “I think he has helped us understand why we wear our poppies and has made the words in our songs even more meaningful.
“The fact John came to Hanbury School in the 1960’s gave his visit a real significance. I’m glad we could welcome him and hope he felt at home here, even though the school has changed a lot since his days!”
John seemed impressed by the changes, and even spent time in Reception’s new classroom, where the children had been drawing their own poppies.
